DVD-R: A DVD recordable format

DVD-R is basically a DVD recordable format. A standard quality DVD-R has a storage capacity of 4.71 GB (or 4.38 GB). However, the capacity of the original standard has been improvised by Pioneer which was earlier used to be 3.95 GB (3.68 GB). The fact is that both values are significantly larger when compared to the storage capacity of its optical predecessor, the 700 MB CD-R – a. In fact DVD-R possessed with 6.4 times more capacity of a CD-R. Data on a DVD-R have to be kept intact; it cannot be changed, whereas a DVD-RW or (DVD-rewritable) can be rewritten multiple times, at least (1000+) times.

A DVD-R possesses the capacity to record the data once and only one time. After this the data becomes permanent on the disc. The disc does not allow or permit to be recorded second time. There also are two additional standards for DVD-R disks; one is DVD-RG that is for general use, and DVD-RA which is for authoring. This is used for mastering DVD video or data and is not generally available to the general public. DVD R is manufactured by almost all the leading manufacturing organization, those who are specialized in manufacturing these devices. The only disadvantage of DVD R is that it allows copying the data only for once and it can not be copied for the second time. DVD R has huge storage capacity and that is much more superior to the 700 MB CD-R.
