DDR memory is the latest type of memory used in computers. A DDR RAM operates at a lower voltage than an SDR RAM, resulting in lower power consumption. Though it has the same architecture as an SDR RAM, a DDR RAM has 184 pins, instead of 168. DDR RAM is a memory technology used for storage and high-speed retrieval of data on a computer.
There are various versions in DDR RAM. The more recent versions of DDR RAM are DDR2 and DDR3, which have faster memory bus signaling capabilities and clock frequencies. DDR2 operates at a clock frequency of over 400 MHz the DDR3 ram is not mostly in market and are not used in the desktop boards. The now Intel boards that comes has the support of inserting the DDR2 ram. The DDR memory chips that are available in the market have no architectural differences with regards to the clock frequencies that they have been designed for. The number denoted on the chip is an indication of the speed at which the device will be performing. Under clocking is the phenomenon of making your chip run at a speed lower than that which has been specified. Over clocking is the exact opposite of this phenomenon.
Amateurs should however not experiment with their memory chips in this manner as it may lead to damage. DDR memory mostly used in servers and network applications and the phone and desktop computer has the ability as a faster memory and this is very important.
